Mobile phone projects

Project purpose and unfolding, clients.

Working with the development of mobile phones, handsets took place at Sagem Mobile, part of group Safran, from 2006 to 2009, the year closing of Sagem.

All the projects were situated in Cergy, at nord-west of Paris, in Ile de France. In 2006 the number of employees reached almost 2000 persons in one site.

Different projects at the same moment were developed in Sagem Mobile: till 15..25 different handsets were under the design, development, debugging, integration and testing. From 2G (GSM, GPRS, EDGE) to 3G (UMTS).

As well some test mobile tools were developed at the same site: measurement of mobile channels, linked with physical level (PHY), L1, L2 and L3 protocols level.

All the projects have been organized in matrices structure: project managers in vertical directions and team managers in vertical direction. For example there were more than 20 specialized teams: L1/PHY, L2, L3/Protocols, protocol tests, integration, RF hardware, audio team, video camera team, antennas team, power charger team, operation system team, etc…

Clients of Sagem Mobile were naturally all the physical persons. But also the mobile operators who used the measurements test tools (which price was 10..20 times hither then price of normal mobile).

Technical realization of project

All the projects of PHY layer and L1/L2/L3 have been developed principally in C and with potentially in assembly or C++.

Bugs and deliveries have been followed in special Sagem framework. There were different branches of CVS code.

My participation in projects

My responsibility covered different tasks during 4 years:

  • Development of PHY drivers (for RF Transmitter)
  • Development of some receiver part of physical layer. Presentation the potential algorithm for the team and simulation it under Matlab.
  • Implementation and integration of solution in real time environment, tests.
  • Development of L1 scheduler part
  • Analysing of L1/L2/L3 protocol parts
  • Porsche/Puma projects management team

Environment and techniques used in project

C, VisualC++, Reglman, Spy, CMU, Security test tool, DSP TI, Mobiles Sagem, emulator of BTS – CMU 200 (radiocommunication tester), Matlab, CVS

Main results

  • Development and implementation of correct RACH bursts detection in real time under DSP TI (QPSK, with Tx Rx frequency imbalance)
  • Various L1/L2/L3 traces analysis and debugging from different international operators
  • RF drivers and Video camera drivers implemented
  • Project management participation (Puma and Porsche projects)
  • Courses on Sagem test tools creation for Master 2 students
